The education secretary has announced a new consultation to seek views on the scrapping of SATs at the end of key stage 1.
Following pressure from parents, teachers and others working in education, the Department for Education is proposing an end to KS1 SATs. Instead, pupils could be discretely assessed without realising when they first start school, the DfE has said.
Justine Greening, the Education Secretary, said: “The government has reformed the primary school system to make sure children can master the basics of literacy and numeracy so they get the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in later life.
“Now we want to build on that by developing a stable assessment system that helps children learn, while freeing up teachers to do what they do best – supporting children to fulfil their potential.”
The consultation will run for 12 weeks and this year’s tests are still expected to go ahead as planned.
If you are the parent of a KS1 child and have concerns about your child’s development in reading, writing, maths or any other area, patient one-to-one support from a qualified tutor could make all the difference.
