Tutoring is now offered throughout the whole of East Sussex – including Rye, Hastings, Bexhill, Eastbourne, Brighton and everywhere in between.
We are delighted to welcome husband and wife team Vicky Bharj and Chris Williamson who are now heading up Home-School Tutoring East Sussex, managing a fantastic team of tutors.

We know that tutors and clients are so interested to know more about their Area Advisors, including the experience they have had in education and the particular interests and skills they bring to the role, so we asked Vicky to tell us more about herself:
Q: What were you doing before taking on Home-School Tutoring East Sussex?
A: I was, and still am, a private tutor, something I have been doing for nearly 20 years. I teach Maths, English, French and Spanish to students who vary in age from pre-school to retired. One of my language pupils has been coming to me since I first started – she’s getting quite good now!
I also worked in an independent school for several years and liked being part of a ‘family’ of teachers. Even though we don’t work together any more, we all keep in touch.
Q.You are passionate about learning and education? Why and what drives you towards this?
A: I home-educated my three children, who are now grown up. It was a huge challenge as it wasn’t as widely done and accepted at that time. There was nowhere to go for help or support. It’s still a big responsibility for parents and part of what I want to be able to offer is that support and guidance I never had. I now tutor a lot of home-educated children and consider it a privilege to be allowed to be part of their education.
Q: You have tutored for a number of years, do you really enjoy it and why?
A: Yes, I enjoy tutoring – I think you must love what you do to pass on that enthusiasm to others. It’s rewarding to see students get better and better in their chosen subject, overcoming what they see as obstacles. I try to instil in them proven exam techniques. It seems to work because most students pass their school tests and external exams with better grades than they or their teachers thought possible.
Q.What drew you to this role becoming the Area Advisor for East Sussex?
A: Over the years, I have often been asked to tutor students, but been too busy to help. By being an area advisor, I don’t have to say ‘no’ to people any more.
Q.What do you hope to offer?
A: I hope to offer everyone who wants help a range of suitable tutors; and I want to provide tutors with students so they can get on with what they enjoy doing – teaching.
Q.What do you look for in a tutor?
A: Firstly, and above all, they must care about the students they teach. They should want to inspire. Their chosen subject should be their passion and I would like to think they will explain their subject in ways that will be remembered. My benchmark is always this: would I have employed that person to teach my own children when they were younger? If the answer is no, then I wouldn’t feel comfortable recommending them to anyone else.
Q.What do you love to do to relax?
A: When I’m not teaching or organising tutors for students, I enjoy relaxing with our three mini sausage dogs and spending time with my family. My sons often magically appear at meal times!
We are lucky to live in a quiet place by the sea, but not too far from Brighton, so I can still enjoy shopping and cocktails with my daughter on my days off.
Vicky and Chris welcome more tutors on a regular basis so if you are a local teacher or tutor, passionate about education and tutoring, do consider offering your own teaching skills and get in touch with them today:
Home-School Tutoring requires all tutors to complete an enhanced DBS check before they can be accepted onto its register, and Vicky and Chris will check all certificates and references.
If you are considering taking extra tutoring support, Vicky says:
“We would love to chat with students and parents, who are considering extra tutoring support, as we know that starting home tuition can be daunting. Whether you need additional tuition whilst attending school or college or whether you are a home-schooling family, we can help you. For the latter, we can share our own experiences and can support you, as we home educated our own three children up to A-level, so we fully understand the commitment needed.”
