Tutoring for success and confidence

Neil specialises in primary education and science, having completed a PGCE in primary education after gaining a first class physics degree.

As well as tutoring pupils himself, Neil gains great satisfaction from matching pupils to tutors with the knowledge, skills and experience to help them achieve their goals.

One-to-one tuition – as well as private tuition in small groups – can provide a great boost to pupils’ confidence and understanding, and Neil finds it very rewarding to see children who once struggled with a subject grow in confidence and begin to enjoy learning.

Hello, my name is Neil Garlick and I am the Home-School Tutoring Advisor for County Durham and Darlington.

I have been working in education for the last six years since completing a PGCE course, specialising in primary education at the University of the West of England. I then worked as a teacher in schools in Bristol and Newcastle and have been tutoring for Home-School Tutoring since November 2013. Prior to becoming a teacher, I studied physics at the University of Nottingham (gaining a first class degree).

As the Home-School Tutoring Area Advisor for Durham, I very much look forward to matching tutors with students who will guide their learning in the best possible way. A good tutor will quickly understand a student’s current abilities, build a supportive working relationship, and use their knowledge and experience to teach the next steps in learning and provide opportunities to practise new skills in depth. Tutoring sessions will be personalised and flexible to meet the particular and developing needs of each student.

I also enjoy tutoring many students myself. The great joy of being a tutor is seeing each student make progress in their understanding, and become more proficient in using and applying the skills taught to them, leading to them achieving their goals. This may mean gaining entry to a particular school, reaching a certain grade in exams, or meeting particular curriculum objectives. It is always a pleasure to see students go from struggling in a subject to approaching it with confidence.

I live with my wife and two guinea pigs near Durham. Away from tutoring I am the secretary for a scout group and the treasurer of the football team I play for. I love spending time outdoors, whether walking, camping or trying to control our garden!

I would be delighted to hear from tutors of any subject who would like to join our team. If you are a parent, pupil or student searching for a tutor in any subject, then please don’t hesitate to contact me – I look forward to speaking to you and helping you meet your goals.

Each Home-School Tutoring Area seeks experienced, qualified teachers and graduates who can be available as tutors. Enjoy seeing your pupils develop confidence and make progress.

Recent Testimonials

Feedback from the parents of a maths student Neil worked with. The student achieved the B he needed in his re-sit to start the college course of his choice:

‘Neil has worked with our son over 2 years and is exceptional in supporting young people with difficulties. His dedicated and gentle manner and encouragement has helped to bring out the best in our son. Neil devises and implements individualised learning plans, and sets realistic goals to help the pupil to achieve. He is skilled in his subject areas, aware of curricula demands and has the ability to impart his knowledge and subject techniques to his pupils that raises him well above the norm. Neil is a very conscientious teacher and keeps pupils and parents up to date on progress made. He has definitely made a difference to the achievements and development of our son, and we whole heartedly recommend him.’

A few words from a GCSE student who achieved a B in his GCSE additional science:

‘I thoroughly enjoyed the three years of tutoring Neil gave me, he is a great teacher and ensured that I fully understood everything before moving on. I highly recommend him to anyone that is looking for a science tutor. He is a lovely chap!’

A comment from a satisfied parent of a GCSE maths student, who achieved a grade 5:

‘Many thanks for the personal and excellent tuition for my son's GCSE maths. The tutor's work enabled him to successfully pass the higher paper, even though his school didn't really want him to be entered at the higher level.'

Testimonials from other satisfied parents who have thanked us and our tutors:

'We all want to say a huge thank you for the support and tuition you have provided with our daughter’s maths and I can't express how much difference it has made to her confidence, we are so grateful Neil. I can't even express how grateful we are for the difference it has made to her education.'

'Your tutor Pat came to visit us earlier this year, to see if she could assist my son (aged 8) with general English lessons, as he was struggling academically at school. My son has worked extremely well with Pat on a weekly basis since. She was able to build a rapport with my son from the first lesson, and has always helped him produce good work. He always wants to know what they are going to be doing at the next session. Each lesson is well prepared and interesting for my son. And she makes sure he is making progress in each area needed, with reference to his school requirements where necessary. I am hoping that Pat will work with us for the next few years.‘

'Many thanks for the tutor’s hard work and for giving my son the confidence to tackle hard questions. The tutor’s attention to my son’s learning put him ahead as sometimes things are missed at school, and individual attention always helps.'

'We were delighted with the result our daughter got after only four weeks with Rowena. Rowena put a lot of effort into researching and gathering the particular materials which were needed. Thank you.'

'My children were in need of a maths tutor at the age of eight. We were concerned that one of them was not at expected level and we did not want them to start middle school behind where they needed to be. The tutor worked with them for an hour each week for just over a year. In this time they have gained in confidence and understanding and have moved from the lowest set in class to the top of the middle set in their new middle school. I would not hesitate to recommend Home-School Tutoring for their professionalism and reliability. I would definitely use their services again should the need arise.'

'We found the tutor very approachable, knowledgeable and enthusiastic in his tutoring of our son, towards Y7 entrance exams. From the outset they got on very well together, our son's confidence was boosted and he gained the desired outcome of passing the entrance exam. We would not hesitate to recommend the tutor to other parents.'
