At Home School Tutoring (HST) we know that one-to-one teaching is really effective. It works! Most teachers and parents would agree individual tuition helps pupils make great progress – but why does it generate such impressive results?
At HST, we believe individual tuition yields such good results because learning is a complex process and doesn’t happen in the same way for everyone. Individuals learn in different ways and at different paces. Learning in a 1:1 setting works better because tutoring lessons can be precisely personalised to students’ individual needs and targets in a way that cannot consistently happen in groups. Learning can be enjoyable, even fun!
Motivational tutors
There has to be a good relationship between the tutor and the student and an element of excitement in the discovery of understanding. This is what learning is all about. Enjoying studying leads to better progress and a life-long enjoyment of learning.
This feedback was received by a HST tutor in Hampshire from one of our students:
“I had a really brilliant tutor. I’ve never really understood maths properly before and somehow he made it live! I keep looking at numbers and patterns and working out things now in different ways. I’ve gone up to a projected Grade B, but before I had the tutoring I think I would have probably got a really terrible grade. I think I might be a genius in maths before too long!”
Fantastic results
Results day is always a time for celebration at HST, when our Area Advisors share news about the examination results in their areas. There is no doubt then individual tutoring makes a huge difference.
A key advantage of one-to-one tuition is that it is easy for a tutor to ask questions to check for understanding. A tutor can then go over anything that hasn’t been mastered. On the other hand, if certain aspects have already been understood, a tutor may wish to stretch and extend the learner.
Time for questions
Equally, a learner is able to discuss and ask questions freely throughout a session. In a classroom setting a pupil may not feel embarrassed or worried about putting their hand up. They may feel silly if they get something wrong. Individual tutoring allows for a high level of quality interaction and response between teacher and learner. That is why personal tutoring works so exceptionally well – and also why most pupils enjoy it so much. They can see themselves progressing, and look forward to their next tutoring lesson.
Even the best schools, colleges and universities face huge challenges in trying to give learners the individual time they need. However, everyone needs individual support and input at various times in their life. Just a short series of lessons can make a huge difference.
