Individual tuition – The Benefits of Private Tuition

At Home School Tutoring (HST) we know that one-to-one teaching is really effective.  It works ! Most  teachers and parents would agree it is an ideal academic environment; but why is it so effective ?

One of the key reasons why individual tuition yields such good results is because learning is a complex process and it doesn’t happen in the same way for everyone . Individuals learn in different ways and at different paces. Learning in a 1:1 setting works better because tutoring lessons are precisely  personalised to the individual needs and targets of the  student in a way that cannot consistently happen in groups.  Learning has to enjoyable, even fun !   There has to be a good relationship between the tutor and the student and an element of excitement in the discovery of understanding and progress.  That is what learning is all about as then it leads into the life-long enjoyment of learning.

Here are some recent comments made by students and sent in from our Home-School Tutoring tutors.  We are not able to give the exact name of the pupils, but here is one, for example, from ‘Henry’ in Hampshire :

‘  I had a really brilliant tutor.  I’ve never really understood Maths properly before and somehow he made it live !  I keep looking at numbers and patterns and working out things now in different ways. I’ve gone up to a projected Grade B, but before I had the tutoring I think I would have probably got a really terrible  grade.  I think I might be a genius in Maths before too long!’

Some of our Area Advisors have posted some comments after this years examination results too. We really do believe that individual tutoring makes a difference.

A key advantage of one-to-one tuition is that it is easy for a tutor to ask questions to check for understanding.  Then a tutor can go over  anything that hasn’t been mastered. Or if certain aspects have already been understood, then a tutor may wish to stretch and extend the learner. Equally, a learner is able to discuss and ask questions freely throughout a session , although in a classroom setting a pupil may not feel able to do that in case they get it wrong and feel silly.  Individual tutoring allows for this high level of quality interaction and response between teacher and learner. That is why personal tutoring works so exceptionally well – and also, why most pupils so enjoy it. They can really feel that they are progressing each time and look forward to the next tutoring lesson.

Even the best schools, colleges and universities face huge challenges in trying to give learners the individual time that they need. However, everyone needs individual support and input at various times in their life. Just a short series of lessons can make a huge difference.
