Marianne Harrison, the new Area Director for Home-School Tutoring South East Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, brings 23 years of educational experience and a passion for helping children reach their potential. She supports families by matching students with qualified tutors in South East Hampshire who can meet a wide range of learning needs, from early reading and SATs preparation to GCSEs, A-levels, and specialist support for dyslexia, dyscalculia, and SEN. Q: Why did you decide to take on Home-School Tutoring Hampshire South East and the Isle of Wight?
I have been working in Education for the past twenty-three years. I have three children of my own and have always been in awe at how every child learns in such unique ways. I have always loved working out how to tap into the learning style of each child and enjoy the Ureka! Moments when they grasp a concept that has previously evaded them. I have lived in the Hampshire area for most of my life, and I want to make an impact on the lives of the children in this area. I love working alongside this amazing, growing network of tutors who equally are tutoring because they love supporting their students to reach their potential
Q: What educational needs do you see most often in this area?
I have many enquiries for tutors from KS1 for early reading tuition, through KS2 SATs and 11+ support.
There is an increasing number of enquiries for GCSE English Literature and As level English language. There has been much call for Maths tutors for KS1, KS2, GCSE and A-level.
We are growing our range of subject specialist tutors for GCSE, A-level and beyond. Presently I’m looking for an A-level History tutor.
Additionally I am being asked for tutors who specialise in dyslexia and dyscalculia.
Q: What services can families access through Home-School Tutoring in your area?
In South East Hampshire and Isle of Wight we do offer online tuition but with the increased concern about the amount of time our kids spend on screens our parents increasingly request in-person tuition. I have a number of tutors with day time availability which enables us to support Home ed students and increasingly more students with AP and EOTAS provision. We have the expertise to support exam prep for SPAG tests, SATs, 11+ , 13+ , GCSE and A-levels. Our network of tutors has recently gained a Woodwind music teacher on the Isle of Wight and some tutors who are qualified in TEFAL and English language development. We now have early years and SEN specialists.
An area I’m looking to develop next year is small group tuition, meeting in public libraries or a small cafe in groups of 3-4.
Q: How do you select tutors for your team?
We are looking for tutors who are passionate to see children learn. Who are excited to discover, “what makes their students tick” We want well-qualified teachers in KS1, KS2 & KS3. Qualified to teach GCSE and A-levels. We expect all our tutors to have an enhanced DBS check and be on the update service. We look for teachers with experience of working in a range of education establishments, who can respond well to the needs of our students. We take safeguarding very seriously, ensuring our tutors have regular training. I have been impressed that this is a priority for Home-School Tutoring and each Area Director is DSL trained, while we also have a direct LADO representative. My tutors have found this very reassuring. Another key aspect of our selection process is our interviews, where we learn from the perspective tutors if they share the Home-School Tutoring ethos.
Q: What makes Home-School Tutoring different from other tutoring companies?
Home-School Tutoring is different to other tutoring companies because it has a friendly feel. It’s like a big family, where everyone helps and looks out for each other. The company founder Margaret Sweetland, at the time a mother of young children wanted to continue to use her teaching skills to support students and enable other teachers to realise a more manageable and flexible work-life balance than sometimes found in the classroom. Margaret, and now her daughter Annalise, have grown Home-School Tutoring into a deeply nurturing, caring, and kind company for both students and tutors.
