Choosing the right tutor for your child is an important decision, and we understand that you may have questions about how our service works. At Home-School Tutoring, we are committed to providing safe, high-quality, personalised tuition that supports every child’s individual needs and goals.
Below you’ll find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about our tutors, safeguarding, subjects, costs, and how tutoring can help. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, our friendly Area Advisors are always happy to help.
- What qualifications do your tutors have?
Our tutors bring a wealth of experience from across the education sector. Some have been headteachers or worked in education management; many are qualified teachers from schools and colleges, and others have built extensive careers in tutoring.
Each local area aims to offer tutors in all subjects, levels, and specialisms, so that we can find the right match for your child. Every tutor is also fully vetted, reference-checked, and holds an Enhanced DBS certificate.
- Are all your tutors DBS checked?
Yes. Every tutor at Home-School Tutoring must have a clear Enhanced DBS check before they can work with us. We also interview and reference-check all tutors and carry out ongoing safeguarding processes to ensure safety and trust.
While it isn’t legally required for private tutors to have a DBS check, we believe it should be, and that’s why we insist on it. As members of The Tutors’ Association, we follow the highest safeguarding standards, so parents can be confident their child is in safe hands. Please read more about our safeguarding.

- How do I know if my child needs tutoring?
There are many signs that tutoring could help. Some children may be struggling to keep up at school, losing confidence, or finding homework stressful. Others may feel distracted in busy classroom environments and benefit from the calm focus of one-to-one support.
Tutoring isn’t just for when a child is “falling behind”; it can also prepare them for exams, stretch high achievers, and build long-term confidence. If you’re unsure, your local Area Advisor will be happy to talk through your child’s situation and advise on the best options.
- Do you provide tutoring for children with special educational needs (SEN)?
Yes. We have experienced tutors who specialise in supporting children with a wide range of special educational needs (SEN), including dyslexia, ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, and other learning difficulties. If you’d like to explore SEN support for your child, your local Area Advisor will be happy to match you with the most suitable tutor.

- Can tutoring be a short-term boost or does it need to be ongoing?
Tutoring can be as short or long term as your child needs. Some families choose tutoring for a short period to prepare for exams, build confidence in a tricky subject, or catch up after time away from school. Others prefer ongoing support to provide steady progress and encouragement throughout the year.
