How Our Award-Winning Tutoring Business Was Founded
Home-School Tutoring is a family-founded business. Margaret Sweetland, a qualified teacher, started it originally in Hampshire in 1984 when she decided not to return to the classroom after her third child. Margaret saw that there was a need for personal and caring one-to-one tuition outside the classroom. So many children and pupils of all ages were trying to overcome various issues, pressures and difficulties in their learning, and she wanted to give extra support and target the struggles they were facing in the classroom with additional tuition outside of school. The focus was very much on 1:1 bespoke lessons, hand-picking the best local tutors and giving learners a real boost in confidence and progress.
From Tutoring in Hampshire to a Nationwide Tutoring Network
Home-School Tutoring was so successful in Hampshire that Margaret wanted to give the opportunity for other talented, experienced teachers to step out of the classroom and experience the joy of running a business that was making such a positive educational impact on the lives of so many children and young people. Since then, she has carefully included Area Directors to run their own businesses under the Home-School Tutoring brand. Each Area Director is also an experienced teacher. This means that when people contact us, we can give genuine advice and support and can also expertly match the right tutor for each tutoring assignment. Everything is done with genuine care and passion.
A Family Business with Education at Its Heart: Margaret and Annalise.
Soon before retirement Margaret welcomed Annalise Price-Thomas as Managing Director of Home-School Tutoring UK Limited. Annalise is Margaret’s eldest daughter. Annalise is also an experienced teacher and Head Teacher in the Alternative Provision sector. Most recently, Annalise was Head of Gloucestershire Hospital Education. Here is a link to her last Ofsted inspection report in that role where Ofsted judged the provision as Outstanding. In this role, Annalise was responsible for the teaching at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital School as well as for a team of teachers who tutored children across the county (in school and homes) on a 1:1 basis when they were too unwell to attend school. The step across to Home-School Tutoring seemed a natural move given that it was a family-founded business but also the work seemed very similar in many ways. She loves Home-School Tutoring as much as she did working in Alternative Provision because ultimately it is all about supporting children and helping them at whatever point they are at.

The Home-School Tutoring Group, as it is now called, is a group of businesses run by an inspiring group of experienced teachers and education leaders under the Home-School Tutoring brand umbrella. Home-School Tutoring UK is the support hub. Each business in the group is unique and has its own personality, passions and expertise reflecting the owners. There are currently 45 areas covered. Tutoring can be offered anywhere in the UK online, but face-to-face tutoring can be offered in many places across the UK too. Following the celebration of our 40th anniversary in 2024, we remain committed to supporting children with high-quality, personalised education. Children are at the heart of everything we do. Our genuine child-centred approach underpins every tutoring programme we deliver and has been a key factor in our long-standing success. Every child is unique, and we are dedicated to helping each one achieve their full potential. Alongside providing private tutoring for home educating families and those seeking additional support alongside mainstream education, we work in partnership with Local Authorities, County Councils and schools across the UK. In 2025, we delivered tutoring services for more than 28 Local Authorities and over 100 schools. We are also proud to be an Approved Provider for tutoring with numerous Local Authorities and County Councils, reflecting the trust placed in our expertise, quality and commitment to positive outcomes for every learner.
