Thinking of learning a new skill? Discovering something new? Or gaining more qualifications? At Home-School Tutoring, we believe education should continue throughout adulthood. And if you need support, we’re here to help at a time that suits you.
Adult learning contributes significantly to people’s wellbeing and life satisfaction, according to research commissioned by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. So why does learning benefit us so much?
Learning makes us happy
Learning is a lifelong experience: it doesn’t end with leaving school or graduating from university. Those who enjoyed learning at school are most likely to continue studying but even those of us who didn’t can find new enthusiasm for learning in later life.
The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) reported that taking an adult learning course, ranging from an art class to improving IT skills, can improve your health and make you less likely to be depressed.
Learning a language or brushing up on your maths skills could boost your life satisfaction in the same way as a £750 a year pay rise, they say.
Learning was found to provide significant boosts to self-confidence, while raising people’s aspirations. Adult learners, it seems, are more likely to further their career and expect higher salaries.
People in their fifties and sixties in particular could enjoy great benefits and counteract declines in wellbeing other people of their age may suffer.
Former Skills Minister, Matthew Hancock, said: “This research shows how adult learning, whether it’s a course to further someone’s career or an evening class for enjoyment, has the potential to change lives for the better, whilst also creating a highly-skilled nation that will help businesses to get the skills they need to grow and boost our international competitiveness.”
Taking part in adult learning can also help parents raise their children’s achievement levels, according to the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE).
You can’t beat one-to-one learning
Home-School Tutoring has been supporting adult learners since 1984.
For adult learners with work and family commitments, being able to fit in learning at a time that suits them is essential. Our experienced and patient tutors are available in the evenings and weekends for adult learners who can’t study during the working week.
NIACE has recently reported a big increase in independent and online adult learning as well as a significant decline in numbers learning at college or university. Online e-courses provide much needed flexibility but learning this way does present problems. When something difficult crops up or is tricky to understand, learners often wish they could speak face-to-face with someone to get to grips with the issue. This where one-to-one tuition can be invaluable for improving understanding and addressing specific points or issues. A few minutes face to face with an experienced tutor can often result in greater understanding than an hour locked away with a laptop.
