We welcome Jen Roberts, the Area Advisor and associate business owner of Home-School Tutoring Chester & Wrexham. We know that new and old clients like to know more about their Area Advisor and what makes Home-School Tutoring unique. Here is our interview with Jen:
Q: What is your background in education and what were you doing before taking on Home-School Tutoring Chester & Wrexham?
I have been a secondary school maths teacher for over fifteen years. My current teaching job is in Wales but I have been lucky enough to teach in many other countries during my career including England, Seychelles, France and Tanzania. I found it so interesting and valuable to explore teaching and learning in these environments.
Q. You are passionate about learning and education, why and what drives your passion?
I love the beauty and mystery of numbers and the satisfaction of problem solving. I enjoy making maths accessible to the pupils I teach, to explain things and use techniques to engage them because education shapes an individual’s life. One of the reasons I chose to do a degree in maths is because I was lucky enough to have had excellent maths teachers, I would not be living the life I do now if I had not made this choice. Inspiring the future and choices of young people is why I want to be a part of education in any capacity I can.
Q. Do you work as a tutor as well? In your own words, what makes personal tutoring unique and what do you feel it can offer?
I began tutoring maths three years ago, I quickly built up a long client list and enjoyed helping students to understand maths and watch them gain confidence and progress. Tutoring allows students to make incredible leaps in progress. One of my students grade improved from a G to a D in 6 months, more importantly he actually started enjoying maths.
Q. What drew you to this role of becoming the Area Advisor for Home-School Tutoring Chester & Wrexham?
As an education specialist, being an Area Advisor gives me the opportunity to pair tutors with clients. During my time as a tutor I have been able to help a student understand basic concepts or coached them to attain a grade C in the subject so they have more job opportunities. As an area advisor I can make this happen for more students. On the other side, being a tutor has allowed me to have a greater work life balance which I believe is so important for other teachers out there.
Q. What makes Home-School Tutoring your area different to other tutoring agencies?
Home-School Tutoring really stood out to me amongst the myriad of other tutoring organisations out there. Once I spoke to them in person, it was clear there was an honest and mutual connection ; just wanting to provide a professional educational service, without commercial pressure or being driven by targets. As a company they care predominately about the needs of the student and how to nurture their ability with tuition. I really like the fact that the founder started like me, as a local business with a young family.
Q. What are three things you would look for in a tutor wanting to join your team?
-
Passion for teaching their subject.
-
Integrity in their teaching and attitude.
-
A desire to understand that each person has their own story and educational requirements.
Q. What do you hope to offer as Home-School Tutoring Chester & Wrexham?
I have lots of things planned for Home-School Tutoring Chester and Wrexham! Having moved all my lessons online during lockdown I have seen the benefits of this forum to teach. I would like to set up online group sessions to make tutoring more affordable and convenient for some students.
Q. And finally, what would like to say to your potential clients who are looking for a tutor for their child or children?
It can be difficult and confusing for parents searching for a tutor. I know if I am looking for an electrician or a plumber, as someone who has no expertise in any of these fields after searching google I am presented with pages of tradesmen I am left puzzled as to who is the most suitable or even reliable. As an education specialist with passion and experience in the field I am able to choose the perfect tutor to meet the clients requirement.
